A giant trade proposal has the Dallas Cowboys landing one of the best tight ends of his era to bolster an already potent offense.
The Cowboys lost their top tight end, Dalton Schultz, to the Houston Texans in free agency. Their TE depth chart is led by second-year product Jake Ferguson and rookie Luke Schoonmaker, the No. 58 selection of this year’s draft.
At Bleacher Report, Alex Ballentine proposed one trade idea for all 32 NFL teams before Week 1 rolls around. For the Arizona Cardinals, Ballentine proposed the idea of the Cardinals trading veteran tight end Zach Ertz to America’s Team:
“The Cards would save $10.1 million by trading the veteran tight end. With Jonathan Gannon taking over as head coach and Kyler Murray’s questionable timeline to return to start the season, they should be thinking long-term.
The Cowboys would make sense as a landing spot. After letting Dalton Schultz walk in free agency, they will be putting a lot of stock in second-year tight end Jake Ferguson and rookie Luke Schoonmaker.
Unlike Arizona, they figure to be a contender. It would make sense to add a veteran like Ertz who could elevate the floor of the position group.”
Arizona acquired Ertz in a midseason trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. Ertz racked up 56 catches for 574 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games, earning himself a three-year extension worth $31.65 million.
Ertz missed seven games last season and finished with 47 catches for 406 yards and four touchdowns. Arizona is expected to be one of football’s worst teams in 2023, so there’s a case to be made that they’d be better off trading a 32-year-old Ertz for future assets.

A healthy Ertz could certainly make a difference in the Cowboys’ high-powered offense, too. CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and Tony Pollard headline a nice set of playmakers for Dak Prescott, but adding Prescott would only improve an offense that has finished top-10 in scoring each of the last two years.
