Brock Purdy had an incredible personal campaign after coming in as a third option for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. And his performances have seemingly convinced the team to hang their hats on him.
The 23-year-old put up some numbers which suggest he’s on his way to becoming one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. But the stats only tell part of the story, and not everyone is convinced he will be able to replicate what he put on display next season.
Former NLF cornerback Will Blackmon is among those who need to see more if they are to be sold on Purdy. Blackmon, who played in the league for 10 years and suited up for the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Washington Commanders, reckons Purdy still has a lot to prove.
“We need to see it again,” the Super Bowl winner said on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “That’s how it always is. When somebody does something well, we need to see it again. Give us a full 18 [games]. Let him actually see some legit adversity, now that we have a full year of film on this guy, let’s see him do it again.
Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, fired the Niners to the NFC Championship game after Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance had their seasons ended due to injury. He was unfortunate to get injured himself early in the aforementioned fixture and is currently rehabbing after undergoing elbow surgery.
The young signal-caller won all five of the games he started in the regular season and his lowest passer rating was 95.4, having gone over 114.5 in four of his starts. We’ll just have to see how year two goes for the former Iowa State QB.
