EA Sports hasn’t had a competitor for its Madden video game series for a while now, but it appears that’s about to change.
A free-to-play title called Maximum Football will be returning at some point, while an arcade simulator, Wild Card Football, is set to drop this October.
According to IGN, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will grace the cover of said video game.
Wild Card Football is the creation of the same developers who made NBA Playgrounds but isn’t your typical football game. While users will have NFL stars at their disposal, the teams won’t be standard as they are in Madden as it will feature 7-on-7 matches with customizable rosters.
The closest comparisons would be NFL Street or NFL Blitz. And, apart from the unique 7-on-7, the game features special Wild Cards that could hand players significant advantages such as strength and invisibility.

Kaepernick. Who only recently indicated he’s staying ready for an NFL offer and hasn’t given up on a return to pro football, has released a statement pertaining to the game.
“My love for football hasn’t changed even if the politics of specific organizations… is complex,” he said. “It’s actually one of the things that I love about [Wild Card Football]. It’s player-driven. The teams are the players. For me, it shifts the power dynamic of how you look at the teams, how you look at football.”
Wild Card Football is scheduled to launch on both next-gen consoles, as well as PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch on October 10.
