The Buffalo Bills are gearing up for a big game against the Miami Dolphins on September 13. Both teams will be hoping for a win, but unfortunately, it won’t be that easy for the Bills. In a recent press conference, Head Coach Sean McDermott shared some sad news that two Bills players would not participate in the game against the Dolphins due to injuries, which will likely impact the game’s outcome.
Taron Johnson, a key part of the Bills’ secondary and named a Second-Team All-Pro not too long ago, got hurt during the first drive of their Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals. He only managed to play seven snaps before leaving the game.
Afterward, McDermott confirmed that Johnson wouldn’t be playing against the Dolphins and mentioned that they might have to put him on injured reserve if he doesn’t start feeling better soon.
McDermott didn’t have a clear timeline for Johnson’s recovery, saying, “I don’t know when he’ll be back.” If they decide to place him on IR, he’d have to miss at least four games, which makes this decision pretty crucial as the season kicks off.
Cam Lewis is stepping up as the starting nickel cornerback in Taron Johnson’s absence. He did a solid job last week, racking up nine tackles, but going against the Dolphins’ explosive offense, especially with Tyreek Hill in the mix, will be a real challenge for him and the rest of the secondary.

Smoot is also out due to a toe injury. This is the second consecutive game he will have to watch from the bench, as he also missed the first match against the Cardinals. His absence is an extra problem for the Bills defense, which must adjust quickly against the Dolphins team known for racking up high points.

With both Johnson and Smoot not playing, the Bills will have to rely on their depth, and they might even have to promote some players from their practice squad for a boost. Kingsley Jonathan, along with Kameron Cline – they were brought up just last week – could be in consideration to lend a helping hand at defense.
The situation is particularly concerning given how strong the Dolphins’ offense is. Miami’s wide receiver corps, led by Tyreek Hill, is among the best in the league, making it imperative for the Bills to adjust their game plan accordingly.
Ultimately, the coaching staff must make some strategic adjustments to cope with the loss of Taron Johnson and Dawuane Smoot. How well the remaining guys can step up and contain Miami’s dynamic offense could very well determine the outcome of the game.
