Kansas City Chiefs’ former wide receiver Kadarius Toney is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The free-agent NFL player was arrested on February 6 on serious charges, including aggravated assault and strangulation, after allegedly attacking a woman in Georgia.
Here’s everything you need to know about his arrest and NFL career.
What Led To Kadarius Toney’s Arrest?
Kadarius Toney was arrested for allegedly strangling a woman at a residence in Georgia on January 14. According to law enforcement, the argument between them turned violent when Toney grabbed the woman by the throat and squeezed hard enough to cut off her breathing. The report states that she had visible red marks on her neck and hemorrhaging in both eyes, which indicates oxygen deprivation.
The situation escalated when the woman attempted to call 911, but Toney allegedly took her phone, preventing her from getting help. As a result, he was charged with obstruction or harassment of an emergency call in addition to aggravated assault.

Kadarius Toney’s NFL Journey
Drafted By The Giants
Kadarius Toney was a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected by the New York Giants at No. 20 overall. He signed a four-year, $13.7 million rookie contract with high expectations. However, his rookie season was inconsistent. He started slow but showed promise in Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints with six catches for 78 yards.

The following week against the Dallas Cowboys, Toney had a breakout game, catching 10 passes for 189 yards, breaking Odell Beckham Jr.’s Giants rookie receiving record. However, his day ended on a bad note as he was ejected for throwing a punch. Injuries plagued his season, and he missed four games due to an oblique injury before landing on the reserve/COVID-19 list in December. Despite playing only 10 games, he finished second in receiving yards for the Giants with 420 yards on 39 receptions.

Trade To The Kansas City Chiefs
The Giants had Toney for a short time. He struggled with a hamstring injury in 2022 and barely contributed before they traded him to the Kansas City Chiefs in October for third- and sixth-round picks.
In Kansas City, he had limited production in the regular season, recording 16 receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns in nine games. However, he made history in Super Bowl LVII, setting a Super Bowl record with a 65-yard punt return. His touchdown helped the Chiefs secure a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Inconsistent Play And Chiefs Release
The Chiefs expected Toney to be an important player in the squad, but injuries and inconsistent performances prevented him from meeting expectations. He remained inactive for Kansas City’s entire 2023 playoff run, including their Super Bowl win. After struggling throughout the season, the Chiefs released him before the 2024 campaign.

Brief Stint With The Cleveland Browns
After his release, Toney signed with the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad and earned a promotion to the active roster on December 7. However, he spent little time in Cleveland. On December 10, just three days later, the Browns released him after he muffed a punt and received a taunting penalty against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kadarius Toney’s NFL Future In Doubt
Kadarius Toney is currently a free agent, but his recent arrest could significantly impact his career. The NFL enforces a strict Personal Conduct Policy, meaning he could face league disciplinary action even if he avoids jail time.
As of now, Toney has not publicly addressed the allegations. His legal situation is still developing, and it remains unclear whether the case will go to trial or if he will reach a plea deal. Regardless of the outcome, this arrest could have lasting consequences for his football career and reputation.
