Myles Garrett has just shaken up the NFL world. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns, citing his desire to win a Super Bowl. In a statement, he made it clear: “While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.”
With Garrett on the trade block, teams with championship aspirations will scramble to acquire one of the best edge rushers in football. Here are three teams that make the most sense for a blockbuster deal.
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions have aggressively built a roster of Super Bowl-caliber players, and adding Myles Garrett would elevate their defense to another level. Despite losing key coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, Detroit remains a serious contender in the NFC.
Aidan Hutchinson has been a force for the Lions, but he missed much of the season due to injury. Pairing him with Garrett would give Detroit one of the most fearsome pass-rush duos in the league. The Lions’ offense is already elite, and strengthening their defensive front could be the final piece to their championship puzzle.

Financially, Detroit is in a strong position. According to Over the Cap, the Lions have over $45 million in projected salary cap space. They can absorb Garrett’s contract while still addressing other key positions. After a disappointing Divisional Round exit against the Washington Commanders, Detroit is eager to make a splash this offseason. Trading for Garrett would strongly convey that they are all in on a Super Bowl run.
Los Angeles Chargers
Jim Harbaugh’s arrival in Los Angeles signals a new era for the Chargers, and adding Myles Garrett would be the kind of aggressive move that sets the tone. The Chargers have the cap space- over $60 million projected- and the flexibility to make this trade work.

Joey Bosa’s injuries have made him unreliable, and Khalil Mack is set to hit free agency. The Chargers need an elite pass-rusher to anchor their defense, especially in a division where Patrick Mahomes reigns supreme. Jesse Minter, the team’s new defensive coordinator, would love to have Garrett as the focal point of his scheme.
The Chargers suffered a shocking Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans, highlighting their defensive deficiencies. Harbaugh prioritizes toughness, and Garrett fits perfectly into that philosophy. If the Chargers want to compete in the AFC West, they need a game-changer on defense. Garrett could be that guy.

New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are entering a new chapter under head coach Mike Vrabel, and Garrett could be the foundation of their defensive rebuild. Vrabel has ties to Garrett, having worked as an offensive consultant for the Browns last season. That relationship could help facilitate a trade.
New England is in a transition period, but they have a potential franchise quarterback in Drake Maye and the most salary cap space in the league- $120 million. Owner Robert Kraft remains committed to competing, and despite Bill Belichick’s departure, the Patriots still have a winning culture.

The AFC East is wide open. If the Patriots want to reassert themselves as contenders, acquiring Garrett would be a major step in that direction. With Vrabel leading the way, New England could become a defensive powerhouse once again.
Other Teams That Could Be In The Mix
While the Lions, Chargers, and Patriots are the most logical landing spots, other contenders could enter the race. The San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders all have the resources and competitive drive to make a move for Myles Garrett.
San Francisco’s dominant defense would be even scarier with Myles Garrett alongside Nick Bosa. The Eagles need to revamp their pass rush after an underwhelming season. The Commanders, fresh off their upset win over the Lions, have an aggressive front office that could make a splash.
