Hill was arrested and charged with felony domestic assault and battery by strangulation.
Oklahoma State swiftly dismissed him from its football and track programs. In 2015, Hill pleaded guilty and received three years probation, requiring anger management, a 52-week Batterer’s Intervention Program, and over $1,000 in fines. Despite the conviction, Hill returned to football at West Alabama in 2015 before entering the 2016 NFL Draft.
NFL Draft Controversy
Tyreek Hill’s 2014 domestic violence case significantly impacted his draft stock. Many teams avoided him, but the Kansas City Chiefs took a chance on him in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. The decision drew public backlash, prompting the Chiefs to assure fans they had “vetted” Hill.

The Johnson County District Attorney declined to file charges, stating they couldn’t determine who was responsible.

During the investigation, a recording surfaced of Hill and Espinal discussing the incident. Hill said, “You need to be terrified of me too, dumb b—.” The Chiefs suspended him indefinitely, but the NFL imposed no further discipline, citing insufficient evidence to prove he violated the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.

Marina Assault Allegations
In June 2023, Hill was accused of slapping an employee at Haulover Marina in Miami during an altercation. Hill and a friend had been illegally fishing for tarpon, and two women in their group boarded a boat without paying. Hill allegedly told the boat’s captain, “I can buy you and the boat,” before slapping an employee in the back of the head.
Although the Miami-Dade Police investigated the incident, they declined to press charges. Hill later settled with the alleged victim for an undisclosed amount. The NFL opted not to punish Hill.
Instagram Model Lawsuit
In February 2024, Instagram model Sophie Hall sued Tyreek Hill, claiming he broke her leg during a football drill at his mansion in June 2023. According to the lawsuit, Hill became “enraged” after Hall held her own against him in playful drills, leading him to shove her with force, causing a severe fracture.
The lawsuit includes X-rays, screenshots of Hill’s direct messages, and video evidence. Hall alleged ongoing pain and medical complications stemming from the incident. Her attorneys referenced Hill’s history of violence toward women in the case.
Detainment Before Dolphins’ Season Opener
Just hours before the Dolphins’ 2024 season opener, Hill was detained by Miami police for reckless driving. Video footage captured Hill in handcuffs after a verbal altercation with officers during a traffic stop. Police cited and released Hill after the situation de-escalated, but the incident reignited debates about his off-field behavior.

After the Dolphins’ Week 1 win, Hill questioned the situation, asking, “What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?” In a later interview, he addressed police reform and advocated for systemic changes.

Despite these controversies, Tyreek Hill remains one of the NFL’s most gifted players. He led the league in receiving yards (1,799) and touchdowns (13) in 2023 and is a consistent game-changer.
