Over the last few months, the country has been dealing with widespread protests over racial inequality and police reform following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of cops.
In the sports world specifically, sweeping changes across the board are being made and will be made in the coming months.
The Washington Redskins have been receiving a ton of pressure to change their nickname for years, but now they are left with no choice but to do it after pressure from FedEx, Pepsi, and Nike. That all came about after three separate letters signed by 87 investment firms and shareholders worth a collective $620 billion asked for them to terminate their business relationships with the Redskins unless the team agrees to change its name.
According to Sam Fortier of the Washington Post, the name “Redwolves” has gained serious traction, with defensive lineman Jonathan Allen and NFL free agent Will Compton being among those in favor of the name.
“Redwolves” (is) gaining serious traction in Washington,” Fortier wrote in a tweet. “DL Jonathan Allen hyped the name on Twitch, Compton did below and the fan petition supporting it just passed 3,500 signatures. Redwolves are an endangered species native to Southeastern U.S., as well as a past support squad for Navy SEALs.”
Wrote Compton: “I’d want to come back to Washington for one day and retire a Red Wolf. GOD what a name! Shoutout the Washington fans pushing for this to happen.”
