Washington Commanders star running back Austin Ekeler went into detail about the concerning symptoms he has felt since suffering a concussion in Week 12.
Austin Ekeler suffered a concussion in Washington’s Week 12 home loss to the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys and was subsequently placed on the injured reserve. The do-it-all RB was also concussed in the team’s Week 3 road game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Since he’s on the IR, Ekeler has to miss a minimum of four games. Washington is on a bye this week, and he won’t be eligible to return until Washinton’s Week 18 road game against the Dallas Cowboys.
During his appearance on 106.7 The Fan in D.C., Austin Ekeler revealed that he experienced memory loss after he was concussed against the Cowboys. Ekeler added that he doesn’t recall coming off the field in that game:
“I didn’t even remember how I got off the field. I just remember coming to…as far as remembering stuff, I had short-term memory loss. I remember my wife was sitting in the room, and I’m getting evaluated by our medical staff in the back room…That’s when I started to remember things, and then all of a sudden, OK, we’re getting in the back of the ambulance to go get a CT scan.”
Austin Ekeler added that he’s also dealing with some neck pain. The 29-year-old has been mostly durable since his 2017 rookie year, appearing in at least 14 games in six of his eight NFL seasons.

Austin Ekeler hasn’t missed more than six games in a single campaign, which is impressive considering he plays a physically demanding position in an era where RBs often slow down by their late 20s.

Austin Ekeler Has Been Pivotal To Commanders’ Success
The Commanders (8-5) have been the biggest surprise in the NFC this season. GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn did an excellent job addressing weaknesses on both sides of the ball in the offseason, allowing rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to produce early and often.
Ekeler has been a key part of Washington’s success thus far, racking up 701 yards of offense (355 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns and 33 catches for 346 yards) in 11 games. If it weren’t for the concussion, Ekeler would have easily hit 1,000 yards from scrimmage.
