The takeover of the Washington Commanders is finally complete, with the NFL approving a sale to a group led by Josh Harris and including Magic Johnson this Thursday.
The Commanders are now likely to undergo yet another name change, having exchanged hands after 24 dysfunctional years under previous owner Dan Snyder, who was fined a whopping $60 million following the sale.
Washington fans saw two changes during Snyder’s last three years in charge as the team dropped the controversial Redskins branding, switching to the Washington Football Team before settling for the current name.
According to Don Van Natta Jr of ESPN, there’s “a pretty good chance” the moniker could be changed again. Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show on Thursday, Van Natta pointed out that the new owners might feel the need to “erase any part of the Snyder legacy.”
“I would not be surprised at all if we see a name change and a complete rebranding,” he added.

Fans are likely looking forward to the change as Harris, who adds the Commanders to his list of teams owned, is already a fan favorite following his ridding them of Snyder.
The Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner also offered to pay for drinks for fans attending outdoor parties at Old Ox and at The Bullpen in D.C. as a gesture of goodwill.
