Former NFL superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski thinks that an NFC team with a veteran Pro Bowler at quarterback should “tank for” USC Trojans’ quarterback Caleb Williams.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner is the early front-runner to go first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Through the Trojans’ first three games of 2023, Williams has a 78.6 completion percentage for 12 touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Speaking to Kay Adams on her “Up & Adams” show (h/t Joe Nelson of Sports Illustrated), Gronkowski stated that “serious change” will come to the loser of the Los Angeles Chargers-Minnesota Vikings Week 3 contest this Sunday.
Gronk proceeded to propose a bold scenario that has the Vikings trading veteran QB Kirk Cousins, which would put them in position to “tank for” the highly-touted Williams:
“For the Vikings, if they go 0-3, there’s going to be some serious change at the quarterback position. They have a good team but they can’t finish, they can’t win games.
“I feel like Kirk Cousins will be shipped out. Someone’s gonna want to trade for him that’s a playoff contender. He’s a good player, he’s putting up the stats, he’s playing well. Kirk Cousins will get shipped out and they’ll be building for the future. Hopefully tank for Caleb Williams out of USC next year.”
Despite leading the Vikings to 13 wins and the NFC North division crown last year, Cousins did not receive a contract extension from the Vikings. If they’re out of the playoff race leading up to the deadline, Minny could absolute look to trade the 35-year-old quarterback.

The fact they wouldn’t give Cousins an extension strongly indicates that Minnesota is planning to move on from him one way or another after this year. Cousins is in the final year of his contract and would be one of the most-sough after free agents of 2024.
And without a doubt, trading Cousins mid-season would put Minnesota in a greater position to win the Williams sweepstakes.
