NFL fans and pundits were so busy laughing at the Miami Dolphins’ “Butt Punt” fumble on Sunday that many of them didn’t even notice the Minnesota Vikings’ version of the “Butt Fumble”.
In the third quarter of the Vikings’ home game against the Detroit Lions, Minnesota running back Dalvin Cook fumbled the football after running into guard Ezra Cleveland.
The Lions recovered the ball, but worse yet, Cook suffered a shoulder injury on the play and had to miss the rest of the game. Minnesota came back to win 28-24 thanks to a late Kirk Cousins touchdown pass to K.J. Osborn.
Cook was having a field day before the play and injury, racking up 96 rushing yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. Understudy Alexander Mattison finished the game at running back and finished with 28 yards on seven carries with one rushing score.
During the Dolphins-Buffalo Bills game in Miami Stadium, Miami punter Thomas Morstead inadvertently botched a punt by kicking the ball into the backside of teammate Trent Sherfield.
The ball went directly out of the end zone for a safety, cutting Miami’s lead from 21-17 to 21-19. Fortunately, the Butt Punt didn’t end up being costly, as the Miami defense and poor Bills clock management helped Mike McDaniel’s win the game.
