Justin Fields has let Russell Wilson know he will be challenged for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting spot in 2024.
The former Chicago Bears quarterback spoke to Pittsburgh reporters for the first time since he was traded and sounded a warning to Wilson, saying he’s “definitely competing” for the starting role.
“I’m definitely competing,” he declared. “I think Russ knows that. We’re competing against each other every day. … Helps me get better, us pushing each other.
“I definitely don’t have the mindset of sitting all year. I’m coming in every day, giving it all I got. Pushing him to be his best, and he’s pushing me to be my best each and every day.”
Wilson and Fields are both new in Pittsburgh, with the Steelers bringing them in via trade and shipping Kenny Pickett off to Philadelphia.
The nine-time Pro Bowler has been named as the starter for 2024, with Mike Tomlin wasting very little time announcing his main man, but having a player like Fields as a backup could be great for him.

Justin Fields Is Grateful To Chicago
Justin Fields also spoke about how the Bears handled his trade and expressed appreciation for their efforts in making his exit as comfortable as possible. He claimed to have informed GM Ryan Poles of his preferred destination, Pittsburgh.
It looked like the trade wouldn’t happen after Wilson was acquired, but the Steelers traded Pickett to the Eagles, reopening the door for him.
“There (were) a lot of ups and downs, but all in all, I appreciate every relationship that I built, all my teammates,” he said. “They know that (I have) nothing but love for the city, for the fans and for my old teammates and coaches.”
Fields said he’s “in a spot where I wanted to be,” even though he knows he has to earn his time under center. The Steelers should benefit from the in-house competition, as it will ensure that they put the best quarterback on the field in 2024, provided both of them stay healthy.
