Drew Bledsoe took a shot at former Dallas Cowboys teammate and quarterback Tony Romo.
Before the first Sunday of the 2024 NFL season kicked off, ESPN aired a pre-taped interview with Bledsoe on its “Sunday NFL Countdown” program. Bledsoe talked about his experience with Tom Brady in New England before taking a savage shot at Tony Romo regarding their tenure in Dallas.
“If you’re watching this Romo, you know this is true. The minute that he became the starter, he became pretty big in his own mind. He was no longer the curious, inquisitive guy. That was the difference between him and Tommy (Brady). Tommy became the starter, he still was asking all the questions…all of a sudden Romo was the guy that had all the answers.”
Brady started the 2001 season as Bledsoe’s backup in New England. But after Bledsoe suffered an injury in a Week 2 home game against the New York Jets, Bill Belichick was forced to start the little-known Brady.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Five years later, a struggling Bledsoe lost his job as the Cowboys’ starting QB and was replaced by Tony Romo. The undrafted product led Dallas to the postseason that year, and Bledsoe subsequently retired.

Now, this is only one side of the story. You can tell that Bledsoe was rather bitter about losing his starting job to Romo. It’s the worst feeling for an NFL quarterback, but Bill Parcells had good reason to bench an ageing QB who had thrown eight interceptions in six games.
But indeed, Romo and Brady wound up having completely different careers. Brady retired as the most decorated player in NFL history, with seven Super Bowl rings, five Super Bowl MVPs, three league MVPs and the owner of every major passing record.
Though Romo put up Pro Bowl numbers during his run in Dallas, his career was defined by disappointing performances in big games. Dallas only won two playoff games in the Romo era, never advancing past the Divisional Round.
Tony Romo Is Back In The Booth Today
Romo and Jim Nantz will begin their eighth season together in the NFL broadcast booth this afternoon, when they call the Las Vegas Raiders-Los Angeles Chargers game at SoFi Stadium at 4:05 p.m. EST.
