The Atlanta Falcons believed they’ve addressed their quarterback worries for at least the next four years by acquiring Kirk Cousins, but Cam Newton reckons they’ve made a mistake.
The Falcons signed the veteran QB to a four-year deal worth a whopping $180 million which includes a $50 million signing bonus plus $100 million in guaranteed money.
We can only wait and see how this all works out for Atlanta.
While there hasn’t been much backlash in media circles, Newton reckons the Falcons have overpaid given Cousins’ unimpressive playoff history, as well as the fact that he’s coming off a major injury.
“It is extremely alarming that he only had one playoff win in 12 years,” he said on ‘4th and 1 with Cam Newton’. “He’s coming off of an injury. Why didn’t they get Justin Fields? I can’t make it about me, but if I were to make it about me, it’s like, I’m in Atlanta.”

It’s hard to argue with the Falcons going out and getting Cousins; he remains one of the best QBs in the NFL. As to whether they paid too much to get a deal over the line is up for debate. He is coming off a torn Achilles and will be 36 when the 2024 season begins, after all.
Even so, Cousins was having a great season before his 2023 campaign was cut short by injury as he had already thrown for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions by Week 8, completing 69.5 percent of his passes. The Falcons will hope he can replicate his 2023 form in their colors next season.
