In a scathing rant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield put the NFL and their random drug testing system on blast.
Baker Mayfield has abided by the NFL rules over the first six years of his career, including passing every drug test administered to him (as evidenced by his clean record of zero suspensions).
You may recall the $12,500 fine he received in 2019 for criticizing NFL officials, but that was later dropped following an appeal. And yet, Mayfield’s clean record hasn’t done enough to keep the league drug testers away.
Speaking on the Barstool Sports “Pardon My Take” podcast, Baker Mayfield discussed the alarming amount of random drug tests he received in 2020 — the year he led the Cleveland Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002.
Mayfield questioned why the league continuously tested him, citing his smaller stature (just over 6 feet tall).
“When we were in 2020, oddly enough, when we were really, really playing well with the Browns, I got tested probably 11 times that year. And first of all, look at me. I’m not a physical specimen. What are we doing here?…
We had a drug tester that really thought his job was the most important thing in the world. And this one teammate, on purpose, would only go do his drug test when he had to s**t.”

Well, Baker Mayfield might as well take that as a compliment. He was performing at a well enough level in 2020 that the league needed to continuously drug test him to make sure he was clean. That’s better than performing so poorly that the league decides against ever testing you in the first place.
Baker Mayfield Found His New Home In Tampa
Mayfield spent four seasons in Cleveland before they replaced him with Deshaun Watson (acquired via trade with the Houston Texans) in a surprise move. Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2022, but he was released midseason and picked up by the Los Angeles Rams following Matthew Stafford’s season-ending injury.
The Buccaneers took a flier on Mayfield last year, signing the 2018 first overall pick to a one-year deal. Mayfield turned in a career year and led Tampa Bay to the NFC South plus an upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round, leading to a three-year extension worth $100 million.
