A veteran NFL quarterback has announced that this season will be his last.
Former Louisville star Teddy Bridgewater has told the Detroit Free Press that he is planning to retire at the end of 2023 after playing backup to Jared Goff and seeing very little of the field for the Lions this season. He’s only made the one appearance, kneeling out a win in Week 5, but he insists he’s happy with the way things have gone so far.
“Whatever was meant for me, it played out the exact way it was meant,” he told the publication (H/T ESPN). “And I’m still with that mindset every day, and I’m just really appreciative that I’m in Year 10. I tell everyone this is my last year, so I’m in my final year and I’m just enjoying it all, man.”
Bridgewater was a first-round pick by the Vikings in 2014 and experienced a career-threatening injury two years later, dislocating his knee and tearing his ACL during training camp in 2016. He would miss the entire season, as well as most of the following campaign, before leaving Minnesota.
He spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Saints, playing in Carolina, Denver, and Miami before joining the Lions.
