Tensions in Jacksonville continue to rise as Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer decided to address his entire team on Wednesday, saying he “embarrassed” both his players and his wife Shelly Urban. Meyer specifically told his team that he’s always cared about two “things,” his players and his “wife of 37 years.”
Last week, the Jaguars fell to the Cincinnati Bengals, giving the team its fourth loss of the season and 19th-straight loss dating back to last season. Instead of traveling back with his team, Meyer stayed back as video would surface showing him at his Columbus restaurant with a woman who was not his wife. The head coach said, “I embarrassed them both.”
When he spoke to reporters, he was asked why he did not fly back with the team.
“I thought at the time it was a chance for everybody to clear their head, including myself,” he said today.
Judging by the videos, he surely did clear his head.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan issued a statement on Tuesday calling Meyer’s behavior “inexcusable.” He said, “I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect.I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect.”
Meyer has guided the team to an 0-4 start in his NFL debut season and he has been embroiled in multiple controversies since he signed on with the team earlier this year.
Meyer’s last head coaching job was with Ohio State, from 2012-2018. He helped steer the team to a national title in 2014. He also won two national championships when he was head coach of the Florida Gators, in 2006 and 2008.
The Jaguars face the Tennessee Titans in their next game on Sunday.
