Some interesting NFL quarterback history will unfold during the 2023 regular season finale this weekend.
As noted by ESPN’s Evan Kaplan and Adam Schefter, there will have been 66 different starting quarterbacks in the 2023 regular season. The only non-strike NFL season with more starting quarterbacks was none other than the 2022 campaign:
It was obviously a combination of quarterback injuries and struggles from certain signal-callers that forced teams to make changes.
In 2023 alone, starting QBs Joe Burrow (torn ligament), Justin Herbert (broken finger), Kirk Cousins (torn Achilles), Aaron Rodgers (torn Achilles), Deshaun Watson (shoulder), Anthony Richardson (shoulder) and Daniel Jones (torn ACL) all suffered season-ending injuries.
Kyler Murray missed most of 2023 for the Arizona Cardinals recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last year. Trevor Lawrence, Kenny Pickett, Geno Smith, C.J. Stroud and Justin Fields also missed time this season with injuries.
The Cleveland Browns (four starting QBs), Pittsburgh Steelers (three starting QBs), Minnesota Vikings (four starting QBs), Las Vegas Raiders (three starting QBs), New York Giants (three starting QBs) and New York Jets (four starting QBs) all played musical chairs at QB this season, so you can thank them for the whopping amount of different starting signal-callers this year.
