Newly-signed Chief Tyrann Mathieu wasted no time in welcoming himself to the organization when he became the first active Chiefs player to speak out on the situation going on with Tyreek Hill, calling it “very disappointing” and “unfortunate.”
The safety goes on to explain that he fully expected to play alongside Hill after signing a three-year, $42 million deal with Kansas City last month, but after the relase of that damning audio last week, that looks more and more unlikely to happen.
“I think it’s bad, man,” Mathieu told SB Nation Radio (via ProFootballTalk). “Obviously, it’s very disappointing. Obviously, I came to the Chiefs with hopes that I could watch him play football and watch him run back punts and catch long bombs and outrun everybody. You know, it’s a very unfortunate situation.
“I haven’t been his teammate much, just basically two or three weeks. So it’s not really fair for me to comment on his character. I don’t think I really know him. But like I said just with everything that’s out right now and obviously the audio, it’s very disappointing, not only from a teammate standpoint but I’m a father as well. It’s very disappointing.”
Last Friday, the Chiefs went ahead and suspended Hill “for the foreseeable future” after they claimed to have learned of the audio clip’s existence at the same time the public did.
The 11-minute video reveals Hill and Espinal discussing the police investigation as well as showcasing verbally and possibly physically abusive Tyreek is towards his son and fiancee.
“We were deeply disturbed and concerned by what we heard. We have great concern for Crystal, we are greatly concerned for Tyreek, but our main concern is with the young child. … We are going to gather more information, we’re going to evaluate this information, and we will make the right decision regarding Tyreek Hill,” the Chiefs said in a statement Friday.

Following the release of that audio, the criminal case against Tyreek Hill and his fiancee has been reopened.
