Tyrann Mathieu signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2019 season and since then has been an All-Pro safety and a very important part of the defense.
2021 is now a contract year for him and it looks like he does not expect to be there past this upcoming season.
In a since-deleted tweet responding to a question about a potential contract extension for the safety, Mathieu tweeted that he’s “probably not” going to get a new deal in Kansas City, noting that he’s been in similar situations before.
@ShowMeFB: “Are we ever going to get a Tyrann Mathieu extension?”
@Mathieu_Era: “Probably not. Been here before. All good.”
Mathieu’s “been here before” is probably speaking on his stops with the Cardinals and the Houston Texans.
During a media session with team reporters last month, Mathieu was asked about his future, and while he says he remains focused on the present, he would “love” to remain in place for as long as it works out.

“I would love to spend the rest of my time in Kansas City,” said Mathieu. “Like I said, everybody’s embraced me here. It reminds me so much of a football town. I think, for me, that’s everything, just waking up, seeing the family, and then going to play football … I try not to get into it. I try to let people who work for me handle that. But obviously you want to be locked in long-term … I try to put in enough work today that things like that are going to take care of themselves.”
