Two NFL teams are believed to have a leg up in the sweepstakes for potentially returning head coach Sean Payton.
Payton’s desire to return to coaching has pretty much been confirmed. But where he will end up is still the subject of speculation. That the New Orleans Saints still own rights to him complicates matters a bit, yet we’re still very likely to see Payton on the sidelines in 2023.
According to Jordan Schultz, the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers are frontrunners in the race to sign the Super Bowl-winning HC in the offseason. Both teams have been given permission to speak to Payton amid their search for a new man at the helm.
Where the Broncos are concerned, the 59-year-old is said to admire the organization, while Russell Wilson really wants him. Colin Cowherd revealed as much this week, with claims that Wilson knows he needs fixing and believes the former Saints coach is the man for the job.
Schultz reiterated as much on the Pat McAfee Show, also noting that Wilson and Payton have had conversations.

To get Payton, an interested team would have to give up a first-round pick and commit to a salary worth around $20 million a year, which, to be fair, is the going rate for a top-tier head coach in the NFL.
