Two quarterback-needy teams reportedly contacted the Los Angeles Chargers regarding a possible trade involving star quarterback Justin Herbert ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots inquired about a trade for Justin Herbert. According to Schefter, Los Angeles bluntly told both clubs it was “a flat no.”
Last summer, Herbert signed a massive five-year contract extension worth $262.5 million. Schefter noted that if the Bolts had traded Herbert, they would have had to take on a massive $63.5 million charge.
The good news for the Patriots and Vikings is that they managed to secure promising young quarterbacks in the draft anyway. New England drafted North Carolina’s Drake Maye with the No. 3 pick, while the Minnesota Vikings traded up one spot via the New York Jets to take Michigan’s JJ McCarthy.
As for the Chargers, they used their first-round pick (No. 5 overall) on Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt. This marks the third time in four years where Los Angeles used a first-round pick on an offensive lineman, as they selected Rashawn Slater 13th overall in 2021 and Zion Johnson 17th overall in 2022.

Chargers Need To Keep Building Around Justin Herbert
The Chargers could have traded Herbert for a king’s ransom, but the odds of them finding a QB of his caliber down the road would have been awfully slim.
A healthy Herbert is a top-five quarterback in football, and that’s despite lacking quality head coaching up to this point. With Jim Harbaugh now leading the team, Herbert is set up nicely to succeed long-term.
Though the Bolts still need to find some receivers to replace Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, the long-term outlook on offense is promising with Herbert, Slater and now Alt leading the way. It might not be long until Harbaugh turns these Bolts right back into a playoff contender following a disappointing three-year run with Brandon Staley.
