Two NFL teams discussed adding football analyst Dan Orlovsky to their coaching staff recently, according to his ESPN colleague Adam Schefter.
Orlovsky, who has developed into one of the top personalities in his role on television, appears to have a future in coaching should he want it. Schefter reported this Wednesday that, not for the first time, Orlovsky was discussed as a possible hire for a “prominent” offensive coaching position by two NFL teams before he decided to remain with ESPN.
The teams in question, the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers, are undergoing an overhaul and Orlovsky might have well been part of that for one of them had he agreed to be part of the project.
The analyst was rumored to be a potential candidate to join the Colts staff in November under interim head coach Jeff Saturday. He admitted to being tempted back then.
“I’ve made myself pretty clear to Jeff,” he said to Dan Patrick. “I want to coach one day. I’m very much so interested in it. Candidly, as the days go on and on I get more and more interested in it. You miss that part of football. I love what I get to do at ESPN right now. I love working for a guy like (ESPN president) Jimmy Pitaro. I love working with the people I get to work with on a daily basis. I have a lot of friends who coach in the league, we talk all the time, they know where I stand.”
The 39-year-old spent 12 years in the NFL as a quarterback and had a stint with the Colts during the 2011 season. The team has since hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as head coach but owner Jim Irsay was keen on handing Saturday the role on a permanent basis.

The Panthers, meanwhile, have hired Frank Reich, whom Orlovsky happens to be a big fan of, as their head coach.
