Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is looking very different this spring as he’s made some changes in a bid to avoid getting hurt again next season.
The 25-year-old considered quitting football and it was thought that the possibility was real after he suffered two concussions in 2022, the second of which ended his season. So he’s taken some strict measures to protect himself after deciding to stick around.
Last year, Tua was having a great campaign in which he led the NFL in passer rating, but it was bittersweet given the head injuries he had to deal with.
The QB has gotten in front of his issues and has already taken jiu-jitsu classes so he could learn to fall properly while avoiding head injuries. But he’s also bulked up, having shown up to his team’s OTA’s looking bigger and stronger.
Some NFL fans think he looks fat, however. You could check out some of their takes right below:

The QB won’t mind too much as he knows exactly what he’s doing. Packing on the extra size will leave him in a better position to take hits without getting hurt, while he should be able to get more air underneath his throws.
“The one thing I saw in practice today is Tua [Tagovailoa] looks bigger and stronger than the last time we saw him,” Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network said on Total Access. “You see it in the core, you see it in the calves and, look, this time of year we always hear guys say they’re in the best shape of their career.”
It’s great that Tua is doing everything he can to protect himself. It will be interesting to see whether he can make even more improvements on the field in 2023.
