A year ago, Trey Lance was on the precipice of being the San Francisco 49ers’ new starting quarterback. Now, Lance’s future with the team is up in the air after he officially lost the backup quarterback job to Sam Darnold.
In the wake of the news, Lance was not on the field for San Francisco’s Wednesday practice, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
The 49ers are “exploring all options” with now third-string quarterback Trey Lance.
It doesn’t matter what the option leads to, if they plan on trading him elsewhere, it won’t net them very much.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the 49ers are exploring trade scenarios and have yet to receive a significant offer, which means not many teams view him highly at all. It’s likely even lower if he cannot beat out Sam Darnold.

Lance has appeared in both of the 49ers’ preseason games and is a combined 22-of-33 for 285 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Solid numbers but many reports have him struggling at training camp.
The North Dakota State product’s inability to establish himself as the franchise quarterback the team was hoping for has not been entirely in his control as injuries have limited him to just eight appearances in his first two seasons.
Lance simply hasn’t played much football and he is now buried on the 49ers’ depth chart.
In the eight games he has played, he has completed 54.9 percent of his passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. The 49ers went 2-2 in games he started.
The emergence of Purdy was one of the most incredible storylines of the entire 2022 campaign and one that would end the Trey Lance era that never had a chance to get going.
