Trey Lance’s NFL career has taken a huge hit in San Francisco as he has been named as the 49ers’ third-string quarterback ahead of the 2023/24 NFL season.
The team’s general manager, John Lynch, has said that the former No. 3 overall pick is likely to stay put. However, he also noted he would not turn a blind eye to a trade that would benefit all involved parties.
USA TODAY’s Nate Davis has proposed a surprising move thatwould see the QB dealt to the Dallas Cowboys.
“No question this is Dak Prescott’s team…at least for the next two seasons he’s under contract. No quarterback on the roster of America’s Team is going to be invisible, but Lance could sharpen his skills – probably for a while – in what passes for anonymity in Dallas,” he explains.
“And don’t forget, Mike McCarthy had Brett Favre as his QB1 for two years in Green Bay before transitioning to future four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers.”
Of course, the situation with the Green Bay Packers was a very different one. Rodgers was drafted by the team and had to bide his time behind Favre.
There’s also the fact that the Cowboys are stacked at QB. Cooper Rush went 4-1 as a starter while Prescott was injured. Will Grier is also very dependable and completed 71 percent of his passes during preseason.

It would be interesting to see if Jerry Jones would consider such an idea, especially as it would probably mean including one of the aforementioned signal-callers in the trade.
