If there was any question about what direction the 49ers’ QB situation is heading, it may become clear this week.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has to figure out how best to navigate Brock Purdy’s return from an elbow injury, while also trying to divide reps for a backup quarterback battle between Trey Lance and Sam Darnold.
Wednesday’s practice was easier for Shanahan because Purdy was absent and Lance and Donald split first and second-team reps. Thursday gave a better look as Purdy took all of the first-team reps while Lance got the first snaps with the second team, but ultimately split those reps with Darnold according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
According to a new report from Pro Football Talk this week, the vibe from training camp is that Sam Darnold will QB2 while Lance will fall to the third spot.
Chris Sims agreed with that assessment.

The 49ers have employed 15 different quarterbacks since Kyle Shanahan took over as coach as they continue to look for their guy long-term. Purdy seems to be the one after his stellar play last year. Lance was supposed to be that guy last year, but an injury early ended his season and he basically lost his starting job because of it.
Lance began the 2022 season as San Francisco’s starter, appearing in two games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in a Week 2 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
The 23-year-old completed 15 of 31 passes for 194 yards and one interception in those games. He also rushed for 67 yards.
