Jimmy Garoppolo understands the business side of the NFL. It might take take sometime, but the 49ers have every intention of having Trey Lance being their franchise QB.
49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters that Garoppolo immediately reached out to Lance after the pick was made.
“One thing that was really heartwarming to me, I heard last night that Jimmy reached out [to Lance],”Lynch said. “Trey was here today, and Trey told us that the first text he got was from Jimmy Garoppolo. So that’s pretty special. I think it speaks to his class.”
Last year, it was much different when Aaron Rodgers was blindsided by the front office’s decision to add another quarterback, Jordan Love, in the first round.
The 49ers pretty much made it known where they going with their pick after a blockbuster trade with Miami Dolphins to acquire the No. 3 selection. It was only a matetr of which QB they would be going with.
“Jimmy knew what the deal was,” Shanahan said Friday. “We have Zoom meetings every day. I got to see him on Zoom earlier that day and we had meetings and stuff. Jimmy has been great. … Jimmy is taking it as a business approach. I think he’s excited for right now, just talking to him, and he’s ready to come here and get back to being healthy and playing with our team. And if we have him compete, I know he’s ready to compete.”

The head coach previously said it would be “very hard” for Lance to beat out Garoppolo to become the team’s Week 1 starter.
Garoppolo was limited to six appearances in 2020 because of injuries and threw for just seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
