No matter what happens in training camp, Trey Lance is going to be the 49ers’ starting quarterback.
Lance sat for the majority of the year in 2022 as he watched Jimmy Garoppolo lead the team to an NFC title game. Jimmy G might still be on the roster, but he should be traded by the time the season begins.
The second year player found out how hard it is to be QB1 in the league as the 49ers defense were all over him on Thursday.
Lance struggled with his accuracy, even throwing an interception.
“Rough day for Trey Lance, who completed just half of his attempts, including one that was thrown directly to Jimmie Ward,” 49ers insider Matt Barrows said. “Best throw was last — a nice sideline throw to Aiyuk over the underneath coverage.”

Growing pains will happen, so Lance has plenty of time to get things right. 49ers fans will have to be very patient.
Not everything was bad:
As Garoppolo’s backup last season, Lance threw for 603 yards on 41-for-71 passing and recorded five touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing for 168 yards and a touchdown.
