Trey Lance has become one of the more scrutinized and criticized quarterbacks following Week 1 of the preseason.
It’s been nearly a full year since Trey Lance was set to take over under center for the 49ers ahead of the 2022 NFL season, but everything fell apart as soon as he suffered an injury that prematurey ended his season.
If Jimmy G had not suffered the same fate as him later on, Brock Purdy would’ve never got his time to shine and Lance would likely be headed into this year as the starter.
One former NFL executive on Tuesday not only ripped the 2021 third overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers, but set off the theory that Lance was never equipped to play quarterback.
Michael Lombardi offered a strong take on Lance not only for his performance in the 34-7 preseason loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, but also anybody believing that Lance was never destined to be a QB on his podcast The GM Shuffle.
“As you go down this road with Lance, it just becomes harder and harder and harder,” Lombardi began. “And you can show all the clips of him moving and all that stuff. But at the end of the day, when his momma lifted him from the crib, he just didn’t have that quarterback instinct.”

Lance was the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and has only four games over two seasons for the 49ers. The former North Dakota State standout showd what he could possibly do in 2021 when he appeared in six games and completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown.
The 23-year-old completed 15 of 31 passes for 194 yards and one interception last year before his injury. He also rushed for 67 yards.
While 2022 seventh-round pick Brock Purdy appears on track to be the franchise’s starter come Week 1 of the 2023 season, the 49ers seem to have lost faith that Lance could ever be that guy.
