Everyday Trey Lance wakes up, he sees his name trending in the news because he is being ripped for not being the quarterback at the top of the depth chart as he was expected to be when he was drafted.
This week, he is being blasted by a former NFL player. The trade that the San Francisco 49ers made in order to draft Trey Lance got put on blast by Marcus Speaks of ESPN.
When the 49ers moved up from No. 12 to No. 3 in the 2021 NFL Draft to select quarterback Trey Lance, it came with a hefty price tag, but many thought coach Kyle Shanahan had something up his sleeves and would turn Lance into a bonafide superstar. Now, with Lance competing alongside Sam Darnold to back up Brock Purdy, Francisco is left without the three first-round picks they surrendered in the deal with little to show for the decision.
ESPN’s Marcus Spears thinks the saga so far could go down in NFL infamy.
“Look, they’ve got a terrible situation on their hands with Trey Lance … This may go down as one of the worst trades in the draft in the history of the NFL,” Spears said during “First Take” on Monday. “The fortunate part is Kyle Shanahan has done such a phenomenal job of getting this team ready to play and being so creative offensively that it hasn’t shown in the win/loss column. But you lost a lot by going up and getting Trey Lance. …
“We sat there during the draft and [were] like, ‘Why wouldn’t you take Justin Fields? Like, why wouldn’t you have Justin Fields in this situation after we saw Zach Wilson go?’ Some of us even thought that Justin Fields should go beyond Zach Wilson.”
The 49ers traded three first-round picks, along with a 2022 third-round pick, to the Miami Dolphins to move up and select Lance. Two years into his NFL career, we don’t know all that much about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance.

In all, Lance has thrown just 102 NFL passes, completing 56 of them for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. He’s also added 54 carries for 235 additional yards. That is not worth what they gave up and now he is set to likely not put up much more during the 2023 season unless injuries occur, which is how Brock Purdy got his start.
It’s been reported throughout the offseason that second-year quarterback Brock Purdy has the inside track on the starting quarterback job in San Francisco if he can get healthy, but he had elbow surgery this offseason.
The Niners also have a lot more invested in Lance, but if he cannot beat out Sam Darnold for the no. 2 spot, then Marcus Spears is not wrong in his assessment.
