San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has outlined the likeliest outcome for Trey Lance given recent developments.
Lance’s stock has taken a significant plunge in recent times. And the quarterback must be cursing his poor luck after the latest career setback.
Lance, who was drafted No. 3 overall just two years ago, has been relegated to the 49ers third-string QB, with SamDarnold jumping him after Brock Purdy was named the starter.
Purdy was set to be an afterthought, having come into the NFL as the very last pick of the 2022 draft. But he got an opportunity amid injuries to Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo last season and approached stardom, winning every game he started.
Mr. No Longer Irrelevant is still working his way back after suffering an elbow injury in the 2022 playoffs but has done enough to establish himself as the first option for Kyle Shanahan.
It was thought that Lance would at least get to play behind Purdy next season but he’s not even going to get to do that barring changes.

Lynch spoke to KNBR this week and revealed that the team is likely to keep Lance around, though he wouldn’t ignore potential trades that could benefit everyone involved.
“The most likely option is that he’s here,” the GM said (H/T 49ers insider Cam Inman).
Lynch also rubbished the reports claiming the Niners have been shopping Lance all offseason.
The QB is under contract for next season but San Francisco is likely to decline his fifth-year option if they don’t find a trade partner for him.
