Earlier this week, the San Francisco 49ers made Sam Darnold the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart behind starter Brock Purdy.
That news was especially noteworthy because it’s another indicator that Trey Lance, the No. 3 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, has fallen out of favor in San Francisco. All of this just 11 months after Lance opened the 2022 season as their starter.
Lance’s trade value is hard to figure out because even though he has just four NFL starts under his belt, he’s a former top-three pick. On top of that, the 49ers gave up three first-rounders plus a 2022 second-rounder to the Miami Dolphins so they could move in the No. 3 spot two years ago.
Jordan Schultz of theScore talked with multiple NFL executives for an idea of Lance’s trade value. Schultz stated the “sense is” the 49ers could get “an early Day 3 pick”, though it’s “feasible” they could get something better.
Amid the ramped-up trade rumor speculation, 49ers general manager John Lynch admitted “the most likely option” is that Lance stays with the team for now. The club opens its regular season with a Week 1 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Purdy, who will open the year as San Fran’s starting QB, went 5-0 in the regular season. He led the 49ers to a second straight NFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Purdy suffered a torn UCL early in the game and had to be taken out. Clearly limited, Purdy had to go back in after San Fran lost backup Josh Johnson for the game with a concussion.
