There’s a viral tweet going around which outlines just how much the San Francisco 49ers botched their performance in round one of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Ahead of the draft, the 49ers acquire the No. 3 pick from the Miami Dolphins (which they got courtesy of the Houston Texans in the Laremy Tunsil-Kenny Still 2019 trade) in exchange for the No. 12 pick, 2022 first and third-rounders plus a 2023 first.
Through two seasons, Lance has made just four NFL starts. And with 2022 Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy set to open this season as the starter, it’s starting to look more and more like Lance will go down as a draft bust in San Fran.
As the @nflrums X account pointed out, the 49ers passed on a plethora of future stars in favor of Lance, including superstar wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, All-Pro corner Patrick Surtain II and do-it-all game-wrecker and linebacker Micah Parsons.
And if that wasn’t enough, Los Angeles Chargers standout offensive lineman Rashawn Slater was taken immediately after Parsons.
The good news, of course, is that the 49ers are still set up nicely long term with GM John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan leading the way. The 49ers are coming off a second straight NFC Championship Game appearance, and they’ll once again be among the main favorites to win the Super Bowl this yeaar.

San Fran is already loaded with all-world talents like Trent Williams, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. If they can win a Super Bowl with this core, it will ease the pain of taking Lance over all those other future stars they passed on.
