A fan favorite has reportedly returned home to New England, with the Patriots reportedly having signed a pass rusher who helped them win two Super Bowl titles.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Trey Flowers has rejoined the Pats following spells with the Detroit Lions and the Miami Dolphins.
Flowers, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, is especially beloved for his sacking of quarterback Matt Ryan in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LI as it saw the Atlanta Falcons dragged out of field goal range and gave New England an opportunity to tie on their next possession. The Pats would go on to complete the most remarkable comeback in Super Bowl history.
The 29-year-old developed into a formidable defensive player from 2016-2018, recording 21 sacks over the span.
He signed a five-year deal to the tune of $90 million with the Lions in 2019 but failed to hit the heights he reached with the Patriots after starting off seven sacks in his first season. The LB recorded just 3.5 over the next 14 games over the two seasons that followed.
Detroit released Flowers last March. He signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins and found himself on the injured reserve with just four outings under his belt.
