In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated for an upcoming cover story, Lawrence revealed that he is out to prove nothing and his new bride, Marissa, added that there’s also more in life than playing football.
“It’s hard to explain that because I want people to know that I’m passionate about what I do and it’s really important to me, but . . . I don’t have this huge chip on my shoulder, that everyone’s out to get me and I’m trying to prove everybody wrong,” Lawrence said. “I just don’t have that. I can’t manufacture that. I don’t want to. . . . I think that’s unhealthy to a certain extent, just always thinking that you’ve got to prove somebody wrong, you’ve got to do more, you’ve got to be better.”
These comments come on the heels of his father saying, “He’s not award-driven. He’s not, ‘I want to win a Super Bowl at all costs.’” Added Lawrence’s high-school coach, “With who he is as a person, he could walk away from it tomorrow and be fine.”
None of those comments will deter the Jacksonville Jaguars from drafting him, but the soon-to-be No. 1 overall pick still wanted to clear things up as he took to Twitter to further explain himself.
“It seems as if people are misreading my sentiment.
I am internally motivated – I love football as much or more than anyone. It is a HUGE priority in my life, obviously. I am driven to be the best I can be, and to maximize my potential. And to WIN. (1/3)”

Lawrence is at the top of a QB class that also has BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, North Dakota State’s Trey Lance and Alabama’s Mac Jones.
During his three seasons at Clemson — Lawrence completed 66.6 percent of his passes and ranks in the school’s history for passing yards (10,098) and second in touchdown passes (90).
