If it weren’t for a changed play at the line of scrimmage from Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, perhaps it’d be the Los Angeles Chargers gearing up for a Divisional Round showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Lawrence and the Jaguars fell behind 27-0 to the visiting Chargers in the first half of Saturday’s Super Wild Card Weekend Game. But the No. 1 selection of the 2021 NFL Draft never panicked, and the surprise AFC South division winners outscored the Bolts 24-3 in the second half en route to a thrilling 31-30 victory.
The comeback was complete when Jaguars kicker Riley Patterson booted a 36-yard field goal as time expired, sending Jacksonville to the Divisional Round for the first time in five years.
While speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Lawrence revealed that he changed the play call on the team’s two-point conversion attempt following Christian Kirk’s nine-yard touchdown pass. Lawrence liked the look he had from the Chargers’ defense and opted to sneak it (successfully) for two:
“I just saw the opportunity and figured that’d be a lot easier,” Lawrence explained. “I didn’t feel like there was any risk…I knew I could get it in, so I just took it.”

Lawrence’s playoff debut started out ugly with four interceptions, but his Jaguars never gave up even when all hope looked lost. He finished the day with 28 completions for 288 yards and four touchdowns, helping Jacksonville to just its third playoff win since 2008.
The Jaguars pulled off the improbable comeback on Saturday night. Now they try to do the improbable again by handing Patrick Mahomes his first career loss in the Divisional Round.
