An interesting trend has emerged which suggests that Kyle Shanahan is poised to finally break through and win his next Super Bowl appearance.
The 33rd Team showed a fascinating graphic comparing Shanahan to Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who just won his third championship ring as an HC. Reid lost his first three NFC Championship Games as well as his first Super Bowl appearance (vs. the New England Patriots) as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Shanahan is on a similar trajectory as Reid: He’s lost two NFC Championship Games (2021 and 2022) and a pair of Super Bowl’s to Reid’s Chiefs. So, history suggests that Shanahan has to break through eventually….right?
The graphic above also didn’t note that Reid also lost the 2008 NFC Championship Game with Philly, as well as the 2018 AFC Championship Game with KC against the Patriots.
And after the Chiefs finally won it all in the 2019 season? Reid endured another loss in Super Bowl 55 (against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and a gut-wrenching loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2021 AFC Championship Game.
Now the man’s a three-time Super Bowl champion.

So for those who think that Shanahan “can’t win the big one”, just remember that this narrative hovered over Reid for a decade and a half before he finally broke through.
