Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce wanted to perform a classic video game celebration after making history in Sunday’s AFC Championship win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Kelce moved ahead of Jerry Rice (151) for first all-time in career playoff receptions in the Chiefs’ AFC Championship victory. Kelce, who now sits at 156 career postseason catches, had 11 for 116 yards and a touchdown against Baltimore.
During the latest edition of the “New Heights” podcast that he co-hosts with older brother Jason Kelce, Travis revealed that he wanted to perform the Jerry Rice TD celebration from the beloved “Backyard Football” video game after setting the new record (h/t Patrick Andres of Sports Illustrated):
“Every time Jerry would score a touchdown (in Backyard Football), his automatic celebration was to pull out a notebook, open the notebook, and on the header it said ‘Records’. “I was like, ‘Why?’ I looked it up when I was older and he has all the (expletive) records. That’s why they did it.”
Kelce breaking Rice’s record is especially impressive when you consider that the latter played in 29 career postseason games, while the Chiefs superstar has only played in 21. In eight less playoff games than Rice, Kelce already has more career playoff receptions. Go figure.
Up next for Kelce? Matching Rice’s ring count of three. And fittingly enough, it’s Rice’s old team in the San Francisco 49ers who will try to prevent Kelce and the Chiefs from winning a third Super Bowl in four years.

Another record watch to monitor: Rice has the most career playoff receiving touchdowns with 22, and Kelce is right behind him with 19. Assuming the Chiefs qualify for the postseason next year, Kelce will have likely surpassed Rice’s record within a year’s time.
