Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end Travis Kelce suffered a hyper-extended knee injury during the team’s practice on Tuesday. Fortunately, the future Hall of Famer and his team avoided the worst-case scenario.
According to Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it’s believed Kelce’s injury isn’t “long-term”. However, his Week 1 status against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night “is in doubt.”
It’s certainly a sigh of relief for Kelce and the Chiefs. But with the season opener now just two days away, the Chiefs will need to prepare for the strong possibility of not having their top offensive weapon for Week 1.
The 33-year-old has been incredibly durable throughout his playing career, having played at least 15 games every year since his 2014 sophomore season. Kelce has appeared in every regular season contest for the Chiefs six times.
Last season, the perennial Pro Bowler caught 110 passes for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns. Kelce has exceeded 1,000 yards receiving every year since 2015, playing a monumental role in two Chiefs’ Super Bowl championship-winning seasons (2019 and 2022).
If Kelce is out for Week 1, Patrick Mahomes will need the likes of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore and rookie Rashee Rice to step up. KC’s leading wide receiver of 2022, JuJu Smith-Schuster, left for the New England Patriots in free ageny.
