The Kansas City Chiefs are 0-1 to start the 2023 NFL season after playing the Detroit Lions on opening night while bereft of Travis Kelce and Chris Jones.
The defending champions have announced that both players are back in practice as of this Wednesday, with Kelce limited while Jones is ready to play on Sunday and will train fully ahead of their Week 2 fixture against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Kelce is practicing for the first time since sustaining a hyperextended knee last week. Jones, on the other hand, had been holding out all summer in a bid to receive better contract terms, which he has since gotten.
The tight end wanted to play against the Lions last Thursday yet the Chiefs weren’t prepared to risk him. Their decision, though it was the correct one, saw them lose 21-20 as they could have really used a dependable pass catcher.
“Seriously though, I did feel like an asshole for not being able to be out there Week 1,” he said on his ‘New Heights’ podcast this week. “I know you’ve got to be very fortunate to play this game. I take a lot of this to heart, being able to be out there every single week.
“You were kind of talking about the toughness rating on Madden – I love to put that on my shoulders, on my resume, that I make myself available every single week. And the last practice going into the first game, I got a little lazy on some of my movement and sure enough, offed myself and couldn’t play in the first game.”
Kelce hasn’t been given the green light to play on Sunday, but it’s looking likely.
