Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid made headlines on Sunday following the team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills…and not exactly for the most positive of reasons.
Toney committed an offensive offside penalty that took his go-ahead touchdown (on a sweet lateral play from Travis Kelce) off the board with 1:12 remaining. The Bills forced a turnover on downs to deal a 20-17 win.
Mahomes absolutely lost it on officials after Kansas City was stopped on fourth down, even having to be restrained by teammates. Both Mahomes and Reid uncharacteristically went off on the refs in their post-game pressers, too.
On the latest edition of the “New Heights” podcast he co-hosts with older brother Jason (h/t Sarah Hearon of Us Weekly), Travis broke his silence on Mahomes’ temper tantrum against the officials:
“I love Pat for that. Everybody’s just sticking up for each other man. And that’s all I give a damn about. If they get fined for what they said, OK, but at least the guys in this locker room know that we got their back and we are all in this thing together and that we’re (expletive) moving forward, man. And we put our (expletive) hearts in it, man. You’re not seeing guys just coming in and clocking in and out for a paycheck, man. You got guys actually give a damn, not only about the wins and losses, but the livelihoods of each individual in that building.”

“This is only going to make us that much want to play harder, that much more for each other. And I appreciate Pat saying that. I love Coach. I love the ability to have our guys’ backs, but at the same time, man, we’ve been in a lot of (expletive) close games and we got to find ways to win no matter what,” he said. “I’m more pissed off at how I ran my route after that on the 4th and 15.”
The Chiefs have never lost more than five regular season games ever since Mahomes became their starting QB in 2018. They went 12-5 in 2021 and now must win out just to match that win total.
Frustrations are mounting for the defending Super Bowl champions, who’ve dealt with consistency issues on offense all season long. Costly penalties, drops by wide receivers and the failures to draw separation have contributed to an up-and-down year for the Chiefs.
They’ll try to get back on a winning track this Sunday when they visit the New England Patriots.
