To know one’s surprise the Washington Commanders parted ways with head coach Ron Riviera after a 4-13 season and a four-year tenure with a combined 26-40-1 and just one playoff appearance where they were one and done.
A lot of names have been floating around as the next head coach in the nation’s capital, but in recent days one name has seemed to have risen to the top and that would be Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Johnson has been the coordinator in Detroit for the past two seasons and the Lions have had one of the best offenses in the league over that stretch.
It was recently announced that the Commanders have hired former 49ers executive Adam Peters as their next general manager, so it will be up to him to try and land the highly coveted Johnson from Detroit.
The Commanders will have a lot of competition for Johnson as it is being reported that several teams are interested including the Carolina Panthers.

Washington’s new owner Josh Harris purchased the team last year for over $6 billion, so offering Johnson a lucrative contract should not be a problem as Harris tries desperately to turn this struggling franchise around.
Last year the NFL implemented a new rule which states that any coach that is currently employed and coaching during wild-card weekend will have to wait until several days after the game to be interviewed. With the Lions taking on the Rams on Sunday night in a NFC wild card game, all those franchises interested in Ben Johnson will to have to sit by and patiently wait to interview him, but he definitely seems to be worth the wait.
