The New York Giants had a scary experience in practice on Wednesday, with one of their players requiring professional attention after suffering a “medical event.”
Tight end Tommy Sweeney, who was working with players going through rehabilitation at the time, is reported to have been carted off the field and was accompanied by head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen after the event.
“Tight end Tommy Sweeney had a medical event and is under the care of medical professionals in the Giants athletic training room. He is stable, alert and conversant,” the team said in a statement.
While the exact nature of the incident hasn’t been revealed, it’s said that the player was put into the cart shirtless and wheeled into the locker room.
The TE joined NY on a one-year deal in free agency this year, having come into the NFL via Buffalo, with the Bills drafting him out of the seventh round in 2019.
Sweeney, who hails from Ramsey, New Jersey, played his college football at Boston College before spending the first four years of his career with the Bills.

He made 24 appearances for the team, making 18 catches for 165 yards and one touchdown.
Sweeney is competing to be the Giants’ third option at his position this offseason. NY traded for Darren Waller earlier this year while Daniel Bellinger is also part of the squad.
