Tommy Devito’s father, Tom DeVito Sr., was a bit confused after watching his son get benched against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day.
The New York Giants quarterback has quickly risen to fame, and it will be hard for Brian Daboll not to keep him around next season following his impact on team fortunes. However, the head coach opted to try something else on Monday, sitting him in favor of Tyrod Taylor after going down 20-3 at halftime.
To be fair, the decision wasn’t such a bad one as Taylor orchestrated a pair of touchdown drives. But he threw an interception on the final play, resulting in a 33-25 loss for the Giants.
“I thought he was hurt, maybe,” Tom Sr. said to The New York Post. “Maybe something happened. He usually in the past would text me from halftime if he’s hurt or something, so I didn’t get any of that. Then I just heard it like you guys did from the sideline reporter, ‘Coach’s decision.’
“Yeah, I’m his dad, of course, I wanted him to play, but I guess the offense wasn’t doing much so they tried something else. Then you just root for the team and see what happens.”
Tom Sr. did not travel to Philadelphia for the game and was watching from home, so he was waiting on his son to explain what happened.
“I was a little perplexed by it. I didn’t see him do anything wrong,” he continued. “The obvious thing was you don’t see any interceptions, so you’re like, ‘I guess I’ll find out after film.’ Even the coaches really don’t know during the course of a game because there’s so much going on until they watch film to see, ‘Hey, he missed this, or he missed that, or that was his fault or wasn’t his fault.’”
