It’s been four years now since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick split following a historic 20-year run together that culminated in six New England Patriots’ Super Bowl championship parades.
But that hasn’t stopped Brady’s father, Tom Brady Sr., from throwing shade at the ex-Patriots head coach who helped turn his son into an all-time great.
During an interview with Christopher L. Gasper of the Boston Globe (h/t Adam London of NESN), the elder Brady ripped Belichick for having “horrible” relationship-developing skills:
“Bill is tough,” Brady Sr. told Gasper. “He runs a military system. It’s a different generation. Bill is a great, great, great coach. But his interpersonal skills are horrible. That’s the bottom line.”
Though Brady and Belichick both stayed away from making any public comments, it’s well-known at this point that their relationship rapidly deteriorated over the legendary quarterback’s final years in Foxborough.
That’s largely what prompted Brady to leave the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 free agency. Brady, of course, got the last laugh by leading those very Bucs to a Super Bowl 55 championship in his first season there.

It’s also well-known that Belichick’s no-nonsense, all-football approach isn’t for everybody. Former Patriots stars like Asante Samuel, Brandon Spikes and Danny Amendola have all expressed their discontent playing for Belichick.
Rob Gronkowski even pondered retirement during the 2018 offseason due to his unhappiness with “The Patriot Way”. Belichick even tried trading Gronk to the Detroit Lions that offseason, but the latter made it clear that he would only play for Brady.
Belichick’s military-style coaching approach might not be as effective in this day and age, but those six championship banners in Gillette Stadium prove one thing: Belichick’s style certainly worked for 20 years.
