Tom Brady may never retire. And based on an upcoming episode of “Man In The Arena,” there is one particular loss that is to blame for the GOAT’s seemingly never-ending career.
According to NESN’s Zack, who got an early look at episode 4 of the series that covers the 2007 New England Patriots team that went 16-0 in the regular season, he claims that Brady points to one particular loss in his career that may very well be the reason why he’s still playing today.
If you haven’t realized by now, that game is obviously Super Bowl XLII, where Eli Manning’s New York Giants upset the undefeated Patriots and spoiled their perfect season. The Giants won that game, 17-14, thanks in large part to David Tyree’s helmet catch. But had Brady and the Pats pulled off the win in that one, the seven-time champion thinks there’s a good chance he would have been “fulfilled” and likely would have retired by now.
“Had we won that game — I don’t know, I’m not a big hypothetical guy — but maybe the desire is a little bit different, if you’re looking at a silver lining. Maybe the desire to reach that point, maybe I would have been fulfilled — not to stop playing at the time, but I don’t know. Maybe I’d play another seven or eight years, and maybe I’m fulfilled. Maybe not.”
It’s a shame that Brady didn’t get to complete the perfect season. But based on his timeline, retiring seven or eight years later means we don’t get to see him win Super Bowls 51 and 53 with the Patriots, as well as Super Bowl 55 with the Bucs. So, all things considered, I’d say things ended up working out quite well for the GOAT in the end.
