During halftime of the New Orleans Saints’ Thanksgiving Day game against the Buffalo Bills at the Superdome, the team held a proper retirement ceremony for longtime franchise quarterback Drew Brees.
With limited capacity due to Covid last season, the Saints felt they weren’t able to give Brees the sendoff he deserved. So they thought they’d make things right by honoring the now-NBC commentator with a big ceremony at the half. And they even got Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady to record a message for the jumbotron.
In Brady’s message to Brees, he thanks his former counterpart for retiring, before telling him not to come back. This seemed to anger the Saints fans in attendance, who responded with a loud chorus of boos.
Joke or not, the fans inside the Superdome were not having it. Brady did have some kinder words to follow, but it was hard to hear them with the boos reigning down.
Brady, of course, is the one who ended Brees’ career when his Bucs beat Drew’s Saints in New Orleans during their Divisional Round battle. Brees has since joined the broadcast team for NBC and is providing color-commentary for the Bills-Saints game, while Brady continues to dominate on the field and has his Bucs atop the NFC South.
