This throws a little damper on the team’s big win Thursday night over the Packers. The Titans’ 27-17 victory moved them to 7-3 on the season. They are not three wins clear of the Jacksonville Jaguars for first place in the AFC South, and just half a game back of the Kansas City Chiefs for top spot in the entire conference.
Downing first joined the Titans back in 2019 as the Tight Ends coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2021 to replace Arthur Smith, who left to coach the Atlanta Hawks.
Downing first broke into the NFL all the way back in 2005 as the quality control coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Since then, he’s also been on the coaching staffs of the St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders, along with the aforementioned Vikings one more and the Titans currently.

The Titans offense has had its ups and downs with Downing at the helm over the last two years. While the team did finish in first place in the conference last season and appear to have a shot at repeating that feat in 2022, they’ve also failed to develop a consistent aerial attack and have struggled mighty when running back Derrick Henry is not on the field or not putting up over 100 yards. On Thursday night, Downing’s play-calling had King Henry run the ball a whopping 28 times for just 87 yards. But they found a way to get it done through the air, as Ryan Tannehill threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns, while Henry had a touchdown pass as well on a trick play.
Downing was charged with driving under the influence and speeding. He was booked into Williamson County Jail at roughly 4:30am and was released just a couple of hours later. No word yet from the Titans or the NFL on the matter.
